Jetstar boosts Tassie flights
JETSTAR will boost its Tasmanian flights with an extra daily return service between Hobart and Melbourne.
The budget airline will also add an extra three Launceston-to-Melbourne services each week for the holiday period.
A much-needed rescue for the tourism industry, the additional flights will start on December 22, just in time for the summer rush.
Tourism leaders welcomed the increase, coming after a nearly 10 per cent drop in seat capacity in the September quarter.
“This is just fantastic news and it comes just in time after a difficult couple of months,” Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania chief executive officer Luke Martin said.
“It’s also good for corporate travel, especially because of the competition posed to Tasmania from the mining boom.”
Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer Robert Wallace said members had been reporting feeling the pressure of diminishing flights in and out of the state.
“Only this week, as an employer group, we voiced our serious concerns that the shortage of available airline seats into Tasmania was restricting both tourism and Tasmanian business,” Mr Wallace said.
From December 22 Jetstar will add a daily return Melbourne-Hobart service, meaning a record 42 weekly flights.
Jetstar Group chief commercial officer David Koczkar said domestic visitors to Tasmania spent on average $1703 each, according to Tourism Tasmania statistics.
“These additional flights have the potential to deliver millions of dollars for the local economy,” Mr Koczkar said.
Jetstar now operates up to 17 services a day to Hobart and Launceston from Sydney, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said the announced increase in flights was a sign of the confidence Jetstar had in Tasmania as a summer holiday destination.
Mr Bacon said the Government was committed to working closely with airlines to ensure sustainable access in and out of Tasmania.
“Tourism Tasmania continues to use research to assist in the development of business cases promoting our airline partners to offer additional services for existing and new markets to and from Tasmania,” Mr Bacon said.
